With the fireworks season fast approaching, the public and retailers are being reminded of new Fort Wayne Ordinance governing the use of fireworks and the state law that governs the sale of fireworks.

The state law, which was signed in March, 2006, helps fund public safety programs in Indiana, such as training for firefighters. The collection of a 5-percent safety fee on the sale of all fireworks began June 1, 2006. A portion of the funds are used for the State Disaster Relief Fund, which helps cover the costs of the State's response to emergencies or disasters. The law also includes requirements regarding where the public can set off fireworks, as well as requirements for structures where fireworks are sold.

The new Fort Wayne City Ordinance was signed in June, 2007. The public needs to be aware of restrictions that are in place regarding the use of fireworks, as well as the possible penalties for violators.
