  • Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat

    09/29/2006

More than 4,000 Americans die each year in fires and more than 20,000 are injured. Many of them might be alive today if they had only had the information they needed to avoid a disaster. The following life-saving tips could make a big difference.

    Did you know?

    • Eighty-two percent of all fire deaths occur in the home. (National Fire Protection Association)
    • Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. It is also the leading cause of fire injuries. (National Fire Protection Association)
    • Deaths due to fires caused by cooking are particularly preventable.
    • Over 50 percent of fire deaths occur in houses without working smoke alarms. (National Fire Protection Association)
    • Home Fires are the single most common disaster across the nation. In fact, 92 percent of the disasters American Red Cross responded to were fire-related. (American Red Cross)

    Cooking Fires Life-Saving Tips
Following these simple fire safety tips can boost survival rates dramatically.

    • Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home. Test smoke alarm batteries every month and change them at least once a year. Consider installing a 10-year lithium battery-powered smoke alarm, which is sealed so it cannot be tampered with or opened.
    • Never leave cooking unattended. A serious fire can start in just seconds.
    • Always wear short, tight-fitting sleeves when cooking.
    • Keep towels, pot holders and curtains away from flames and heating elements.
    • Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup which can ignite.
    • If a fire breaks out while cooking, put a lid on the pan to smother it or use baking soda or fire extinguisher. Never throw water on a grease fire.
    • Heat oil gradually to avoid burns from spattering grease. Use extra caution when preparing deep-fried foods.
    • Never use the range or oven to heat your home.
    • Double-check the kitchen before you go to bed or leave the house. Make sure all small appliances are turned off.
    • Don't cook if you're under the influence of alcohol, taking a medication that causes drowsiness, or fatigued.
    • For an oven or broiler fire, turn off the heat and keep the oven door shut to smother the fire.
    • To prevent a microwave oven fire, never put anything metallic in the microwave. If a fire occurs, keep the microwave oven's door closed and unplug it.
    • Don't try to move or carry a pan in which there is a grease fire. Even though moving the pan is a common reaction when a grease fire is discovered, it often results in burns to the carrier and additional fire damage.

  • New fireworks law now in effect in Fort Wayne

    06/14/2007
With the fireworks season fast approaching, the public and retailers are being reminded of a new Fort Wayne Ordinance governing the use of fireworks and the state law that governs the sale of fireworks.

The state law, which was signed in March, 2006, helps fund public safety programs in Indiana, such as training for firefighters. The collection of a 5-percent safety fee on the sale of all fireworks began June 1, 2006. A portion of the funds are used for the State Disaster Relief Fund, which helps cover the costs of the State’s response to emergencies or disasters. The law also includes requirements regarding where the public can set off fireworks, as well as requirements for structures where fireworks are sold.

The new Fort Wayne City Ordinance was signed in June, 2007. The public needs to be aware of restrictions that are in place regarding the use of fireworks, as well as the possible penalties for violators.

Some of the provisions in the new Fort Wayne City Ordinance include:

    • Fireworks may be used only on the user’s property, on the property of someone who has consented to the use of fireworks, or at a special discharge location. (Note: A special discharge location is a place designated by the State Fire Marshal for the discharge of consumer fireworks).
    • Fireworks can be purchased only by adults 18 years of age or older. Children under 18 may only use fireworks when an adult is present.
    • Fireworks may be used only between 5:00 p.m. two hours after dusk (approximately 11:00 p.m.) from June 29-July 3 and again from July 5-9. On the day before Memorial Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, the day before Labor Day and Labor Day, the hours are extended from 10 a.m. until midnight. For New Year’s Eve, fireworks may be used from 10:00 a.m. Dec. 31 until 1:00 a.m., Jan. 1.
    • Penalties for violating the fireworks law can range from a Class A misdemeanor up to a Class C felony in the case of the reckless or intentional use of fireworks that results in a person’s death.

The state law also includes requirements for fireworks retailers:

    • Locations where fireworks are sold must be registered with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Fire and Building Safety. (IDHS). The locations must also comply with safety requirements specified in the law for various types of structures.
    • Each fireworks retail sales location will be inspected by the IDHS and/or the Code Enforcement Division of the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
