• Fleming Ave. E. House Fire

    February 28, 2015 -  The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 300 block of Fleming Ave. E.  First arriving crews found heavy smoke and fire showing throughout the two story home.  Four of the home's occupants were assisted by a neighbor and were already outside prior to FWFD's arrival.  The occupants were able to tell arriving crews, despite their attempts to reach, one juvenile was still inside. Crews made entry, located and pulled the child to safety.  Once outside, firefighters provided medical assistance until medics arrived on scene and took over patient care.  One adult and one child were transported.  The adult was treated for minor injuries and released.  The child was transported in critical condition.  At the time of this report, no further condition updates have been provided.

    Firefighters were able to control the fire in approximately 32 minutes.  Communications, FWPD, TRAA, NIPSCO, AEP and Neighborhood Code assisted at the scene.  The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

  • Lake Ave. Duplex Fire

    Lake3February 18, 2015 - Communications dispatched the Fort Wayne Fire Department to the 900 block of Lake Ave. after multiple reports of a structure fire. Crews arrived on scene of the two story home that houses two 2-story apartments (938 Lake Ave. and 940 Lake Ave.) and found heavy fire and smoke coming from both the first and second floor with extension into the attic/roof area. Crews worked to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading to neighboring structures in close proximity. Witnesses reported one person self-evacuated from an apartment prior to FWFD's arrival and sought treatment at a local hospital for minor injuries. No one else was home at the time of the blaze and no other injuries were reported. Crews took 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. At the time of this report, crews remain on scene overhauling and will continue to be rotated. FWPD, TRAA, Neighborhood Code, Nipsco, AEP and Rehab Unit 70 from St. Joseph Township Fire Department assisted on scene.

  • Summit Street House Fire

    February 16, 2015 - Three adults and four children escaped a house fire last night that was determined to be accidental and electrical in nature.  The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to the one story home in the 1200 block of Summit St.  Crews arrived on scene to find moderate smoke coming from the roof of the structure.  Firefighters made entry and were able to locate the fire in the attic area and extinguish it.  Extensive overhaul was necessary.  The structure sustained moderate fire, water and smoke damage.  No injuries were reported. 

  • Sherwood Terrace W. Fire

    February 14, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 400 block of Sherwood Terrace W.  Upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from an upstairs bedroom in the two story home.  Crews made an aggressive interior attack and were able to control the fire in 12 minutes.  Two adults, six children and their three family dogs were home at the time of the blaze and were able to safely self-evacuate prior to FWFD's arrival.  The structure sustained heavy fire damage to the upstairs bedroom with moderate water and smoke damage throughout the house.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Craftline Printing Fire

    February 13, 2015 - In the dual response zone of 3522 West Ferguson Road, the Fort Wayne Fire Department and Southwest Fire District responded to a building fire at Craftline Printing.  Employees reported smoke coming from the building's interior ductwork, prompting safe evacuation of all staff.  Firefighters arrived to find fire within the ductwork and a commercial compactor.  Crews worked to extinguish the fire and were able to bring it under control in 47 minutes.  Extensive overhaul was necessary to ensure any hotspots were extinguished.  The building sustained minor fire, water and smoke damage.  No injuries were reported.

  • Inwood Lane House Fire

    February 1, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 6000 block of Inwood Lane.  The homeowner came home and found smoke throughout the one story house.  Crews arrived on scene and found fire in the center bedroom with some extension into the home's attic area.  Firefighters were able to control the blaze in 12 minutes.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

  • Barthold St. House Fire

    January 29, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to the 1200 block of Barthold Street after reports of a possible structure fire.  Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the roof the two story house.  Crews made entry and located the fire in the attic area of the house.  One person was home at the time of the blaze and self-evacuated prior to FWFD's arrival.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Florida Dr. Apartment Fire

    January 27, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to a reported apartment fire after reports of smoke and flames visible.  Fire crews arrived and found flames coming from a third floor apartment of the three story building.  Additional crews were called to the scene as a precautionary measure due to the large number of apartments and residents in the building. Crews worked to evacuate the building and extinguish the blaze located in apartment 12-C.  No one was home in the involved apartment.  Two cats were rescued.  Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the fire apartment and place it under control in 16 minutes.  Minor smoke, fire and water damage was reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

  • South Harrison Duplex Fire

    January 26, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire in the 2300 block of South Harrison.  Crews arrived on scene and found smoke coming from a second floor window of the two story duplex.  Three adults and three pets had already evacuated.  Firefighters made entry and located a fire in an upstairs bedroom.  They were able to contain the blaze and extinguish it in 28 minutes.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  The Red Cross was called to assist the home's occupants. 

  • Warsaw House Fire

    February 24, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire in the 4000 block of Warsaw.  On arrival crews found light smoke showing from the front of a two story home with its five occupants, two adults and three children, self-evacuated.  Crews made entry and located the seat of the fire in a second floor bedroom closet.  The fire was contained and controlled in nine minutes.  Investigators determined the fire to be a result of a juvenile playing with a lighter.  One firefighter received minor injuries that did not required medic transport. 

  • Central House Fire

    February 23, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 2900 block of Central.  Upon arrival to the two story home,  crews found smoke coming from a second story bedroom.  Six people were home at the time and safely self-evacuated prior to FWFD's arrival.  The fire was located and controlled in 9 minutes.  Damage was contained mainly to the room of origin.  Red Cross was called to assist the home's occupants.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Lux Cleaners Fire

    February 22, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) responded to a possible structure fire at Lux Cleaners at 5618 W. Jefferson Blvd. A passing motorist called reporting smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters arrived and located fire in the attic area of the building. Multiple crews made the scene and were able to control the blaze in 32 minutes. There were three people inside the building at the time of the blaze. They were able to evacuate prior to FWFD's arrival. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

  • Savana Springs Apartment Fire

    February 19, 2014 - A fire alarm alerted residents at Savana Springs Apartment complex of a fire.  When crews arrived, all occupants had self-evacuated the two story structure prior to the FWFD's arrival.  Firefighters discovered a fire had occurred in a bedroom of a 2nd floor apartment and was nearly extinguished from the activated sprinkler system in the room.  Although fire and smoke damage was minimal, both the involved apartment and an apartment below sustained water damage.  There were no injuries.  The fire's cause remains under investigation.

  • Lillie St. House Fire

    February 15, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 3030 Lillie Street.  First arriving crews found smoke showing from the two story vacant home.  Firefighters made entry and located fire in multiple locations on the first and second floor.   Crews were able to extinguish the fires in 11 minutes.  No injuries were reported.  The structure sustained moderate fire, water and smoke damage. 

  • Art Van Furniture Fire

    February 14, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire at Art Van Furniture Store at 311 E. Coliseum Blvd.  Upon arrival crews found smoke showing from the front of the building.  All occupants were already evacuated.  Firefighters made entry and located active fire at the front of the building in the interior wall and ceiling area.  Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly  but extensive overhaul was necessary to expose and extinguish hidden fires and hot spots.  Adjacent occupancies in the strip mall structure were checked for smoke and fire extension.  Crews prevented any fire spread beyond initial occupancy.  The fire was placed under control in less than one hour.  The structures sustained moderate fire damage and minor water and smoke damage.  The cause remains under investigation. 

  • Mapledowns House Fire

    February 14, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire after multiple callers reported smoke coming from the attic area of 6502 Mapledowns.  On arrival crews made entry and quickly extinguished the fire in the attic area.  One person was home at the time of the blaze but was able to self-evacuate prior to FWFD's arrival.  The one story structure sustained heavy fire damage with moderate water and smoke damage.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Goshen Ave. House Fire

    February 12, 2014 - No one was home at the scene of a house fire late last night.  The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 710 Goshen Ave.  On arrival crews found heavy fire throughout the one story house.  Fire had extended into the attic area and was pushing out the outside walls.  Firefighters were able to control the blaze in 25 minutes.  The structure sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. 

  • Central Garage Fire

    February 11, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at  2308 Central.  On arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the detached garage.  Crews were able to control the blaze in 25 minutes but were hampered by extreme cold temperatures along with a vehicle and other items stored inside the structure.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.   

  • McKinnie House Fire

    February 5, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 2033 McKinnie.  On arrival crews found fire coming from the side of the one story home.  Crews located the fire in the living room area and were able to control it in five minutes.  One person was home at the time of the blaze.  While the individual was able to self-evacuate prior to FWFD's arrival, medical attention was needed.  The subject was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.  While searching the home, firefighters did locate two cats that had perished.  The structure sustained moderate water, smoke and fire damage.  The cause remains under investigation. 

  • St. Joseph Blvd. House Fire

    February 17, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 1426 St. Joseph Blvd.  Upon arrival crews found heavy fire coming from the rear first floor of the two story structure.  The home was searched and was found to be vacant.  The fire was extinguished, and its cause is under investigation. 

  • Hazelett Rd. House Fire

    February 12, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire at 6151 Hazelett Rd. Upon arrival crews found heavy fire on the outside rear of the two story home with some extension inside.  Firefighters quickly determined no one was home and were able to extinguish the blaze in 16 minutes.  No inuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

  • Felician House Fire

    February 12, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a house fire at 3317 Felician.  Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor of the two story home.  Crews made entry and were able to locate and extinguish the fire in eight minutes.  The structure sustained heavy fire damage on the first floor, and moderate smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the home.  Although no one was home at the time of the blaze, two cats did perish.  The cause of the blaze is under investigation. 

  • Delaware Ave. House Fire

    February 2, 2013 -  Three adults and two children were evacuated Saturday after a two story duplex fire at 1060 Delaware Avenue.  Fort Wayne Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from the attic area of the duplex.  A woman and two children were downstairs at the time of the fire and self-evacuated prior to the fire departments arrival.  Firefighters then located two other adults who were upstairs sleeping and evacuated them.  There were no injuries reported.  Crews on scene were able to extinguish the blaze.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

  • Lynn Ave. House Fire

    February 1, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) was called to the 2500 block of Lynn Avenue for a possible structure fire.  Upon arrival crews found smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the structure. Firefighters made entry and located the fire in the second floor apartment's kitchen area.  Crews were able to quickly contain and extinguish the blaze. Moderate smoke, fire and water damage was reported.  Three people were home at the time of the fire, but had self-evacuated prior to FWFD's arrival.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Woodview Blvd. House Fire

    February 16, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 803 Woodview Boulevard just after 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.  Upon arrival heavy smoke was found coming from the two story residential structure.  Firefighters located the fire and were able to place it under control in 13 minutes.  No one was home at the time of the fire.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. 

  • Dryer Fire

    February 12, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 3710 South Park Drive.  Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen area near the laundry dryer.  The fire was quickly extinguished.  One person was home and self-evacuated prior to FWFD's arrival.  The resident said he heard a squeal coming from the laundry area and found fire in the dryer.  He quickly gathered the family's dogs and evacuated the structure.  No injuries were reported. 

  • Fox Point Trail Fire

    February 9, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to an apartment fire at 1915 Fox Point Trail.  Upon arrival crews found smoke coming from a second story apartment.  After entry, fire crews found smoke in the common stairwell and fire in apartment A.  Crews began an offensive fire attack and began their primary search.  One victim was found in the fire apartment.  The patient was quickly evacuated and transported to the hospital in critical condition. The patient's condition has since been upgraded to serious.   The fire was contained and its extension was limited.  The cause of the fire was accidental in nature and was the result of unattended food on the stove.  No working smoke alarm was detected at the time of the fire. 

     

  • Andrew Street Fire

    2011 AndrewwebFebruary 2, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire at 2011 Andrew Street.  Upon arrival crews found smoke coming from the home.  Witnesses outside the property said someone was still inside.  Multiple crews entered the structure and began a primary search of the residence and others worked to knock down the fire.  It was quickly determined no one was inside.  The fire was extinguished but not before the home suffered heavy smoke damage.  One firefighter was hurt on scene and transported to a local hospital in good condition.  Investigators determined candles left burning unattended caused the blaze.  TRAA, FWPD and Nipsco assisted at the scene.  (Photo shared by Holly B.)

  • Firefighters Promoted

    The Fort Wayne Fire Department announced the promotion of three firefighters to the rank of Lieutenant.  Monday, February 7, 2011 firefighters Brandon Dickmeyer, Sean Elsten and Daniel Schmitt were sworn in.  The promoted officers will serve in the Operations Division. 

  • Large Commercial Fire

    The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) responded to a large commercial fire at Indiana Refractories Inc. at 219 East Murray Street, February 11.  FWFD's Assistant Fire Chief Amy Biggs was leaving the Fire building, located next door to Indiana Refractories Inc., when she saw smoke billowing out the back of the business and from its eves.  Crews arrived at 5:17 p.m.  More than 40 firefighters battled the blaze.  No one was in the building at the time of the fire.  It was ruled under control at 6:45 p.m.  The FWPD and TRAA were on scene to assist the FWFD.  A rehab area was based out of the fire shop.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

  • FWFD elects two Merit Commission members

    Fort Wayne Firefighters voted over the last three days to elect two representatives, one each from different political parties, to be appointed to serve on the newly formed Merit Commission. Democratic candidates were Arthur Heredia and James Corbat; Republican candidates were Abner Crosby and J. Michael Loomis. 91 ballots were cast over the three days and votes were tallied at the closing of the voting last night at the Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters Local 124 Union Hall. Abner Crosby received the most votes (70 votes) followed by Arthur M. Heredia receiving 57 votes. Crosby will be appointed to a 4-year term and Heredia to a 2-year term by virtue of number of votes received.

    Abner Crosby is a retired Fort Wayne firefighter and Arthur Heredia is a retired Director of Facilities Engineer. They will join the Mayor’s 3 appointments, Sharon Peters, Quinton Dixie and Frank Cassagrande to make up the five-member Commission. The Merit Commission will oversee the hiring, promotion, evaluation and discipline of the Fort Wayne Firefighters. Members will be sworn-in March 2nd, 2009 at 5:00 P.M. prior to the Commission’s initial meeting that will take place on the 5th floor of the Fort Wayne Police headquarters located on Creighton Street.
