South Barr Street House Fire

July 19, 2012 -  Four people escaped serious injury after escaping a house fire early this morning.  The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire with people trapped at 3737 South Barr Street.  Crews arrived in less than a minute from the initial call to find fire venting from a window on the first floor and occupants outside.  Firefighters attended to the victims, as well as advanced hose lines to extinguish the fire.  The fire was under control in 11 minutes.

The adult occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and self-rescued themselves and two small children by dropping the children from a second floor window to bystanders.  The adults then jumped from the second floor window.  All four occupants were transported by TRAA to a local hospital in stable condition.

The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction to the power cord on a window air conditioning unit located on the first floor.  The structure sustained moderate fire and water damage and heavy smoke damage.  The FWFD was assisted on scene by TRAA and the FWPD.
