December 23, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire at 1122 W. Wayne Street. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the third story of the structure with all residents already self-evacuated. Crews made entry and determined the fire to be in the third floor knee walls with heavy extension into attic area. While crews made an aggressive interior attack, they were at one point forced outside to fight the fire defensively due to deteriorating conditions and possible compromised structural integrity.   Firefighters were able to gain some control of the fire and returned to their interior attack.

The structure is a three story home split into five units. Three units had occupants at home at the time of the fire and all escaped without injury. Residents reported two cats were missing. Firefighters did find and rescue one cat this afternoon. The second cat remains unaccounted for.

The structure sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage throughout and extensive overhaul was necessary.   No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
