I-69 Southbound Accident

October 1, 2013 - Fort Wayne Firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a single vehicle Semi accident on I-69 southbound at the 309 mile marker.  Crews arrived to find a Semi had left the roadway and crashed through the concrete sound barrier burying its nose into a hillside.  Firefighters extinguished a small fire below the vehicle on arrival.  The Semi was transporting cabbage in crates that spilled over the front of the vehicle atop the driver who was pinned in the wreckage.  Firefighters, assisted by FWPD, TRAA medics and Hoagy's Wrecker Service worked for more than two hours to extricate the patient before a decision was made to amputate a portion of the victim's leg to free him.  A TRAA medic, guided by a Lutheran Hospital trauma physician performed the procedure.  Once freed, the patient was transported to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.
