Protective Coatings Building Fire

March 6, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a report of insulation on fire in a building at Protective Coatings at 1602 Birchwood.  Additional callers reported flames and smoke visible on the roof area.  The first units arrived within three minutes,  entered the structure and located a small fire in the roofing material.  After some initial challenge to reach the fire because of its location, crews were able to extinguish the blaze in 28 minutes.  The structure sustained minor fire, smoke and water damage.  No injuries were reported as the 15 occupants safely evacuated prior to FWFD's arrival.  Investigators determined the fire was caused by workers cutting metal near the roof.
