• Wyndham Garden Hotel Fire

    November 16, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) was dispatched to abuilding fire 1619 Washington Center Road, which was later changed to 5750 Challenger Parkway. Initial crews discovered heavy fire involvement on the exterior of the Wyndham Garden Hotel, which was extending into the interior of the hotel. Forty firefighters were on scene within 8 minutes of the alarm, including 3 ladder trucks. Thirty-seven rooms were reported to be occupied at the time of the fire. The number was later confirmed to be 22. All occupants escaped without injury and the Wyndham Garden Hotel owner ensured that they were all provided with alternate shelter. The fire was confirmed to be under control just over an hour from arrival on scene. The FWFD received assistance from FWPD, Neighborhood Code, TRAA, AEP, and NIPSCO. Crews remained on scene throughout the night to ensure the safety of the scene and assisted residents with removal of possessions. The fire's cause remains under investigation.

  • Isaac Tire Building Fire

    November 15, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Isaac Tire. The first arriving unit reported smoke showing from the structure and forced entry to find the source of the smoke. The warehouse and manufacturing area were charged with smoke and units were able to locate an air compressor that had overheated and created the smoke. The equipment was disconnected from the power and dry chemical was used to extinguish the remaining fire. Due to the size of the structure additional time was needed to clear the smoke from the building. The cause of the unit overheating is under investigation and the building was turned over to the building rep. No injuries were reported from this incident.

  • 900 Oaklawn Apartment Fire

    November 14, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Dept. responded to a reported apartment fire in the 900 block of Oaklawn Ct. Upon arrival firefighters found fire in an upstairs bedroom. The first fire units arrived in 3 minutes and made an aggressive interior attack on the fire. The fire extended into the attic area of the apartment and caused some damage to the attic area and bedrooms of the apartment next door, the residence of that apartment self-evacuated as the fire dept. arrived. This fire was placed under control in 23 minutes with lots of overhaul to do. There was heavy fire damage to the bedroom in main apartment with moderate water and smoke damage though out. The next door apartment had moderate fire, water, smoke damage mostly upstairs. No injuries were reported and this fire remains under investigation.

  • 1200 Swinney Apartment Fire

    November 14, 2015 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1200 block of Swinney Ave. Upon arrival, it was reported by FWPD that occupants of the first floor apartment were out of the structure but conditions on the second floor did not allow them to confirm that the second floor was unoccupied. While the first Fire unit attacked the fire the second unit searched the second floor and found it to be unoccupied. The structure housed 4 apartments with 2 sustaining heavy fire and water damage and the other 2 having smoke damage. No injuries were reported by any Occupant or Firefighter, but 2 cats did not survive the fire. Extensive overhaul of the fire apartment revealed no extension and the fire was put under control. The fire remains under investigation.

  • 2700 Paulding Apartment Fire

    November 8, 2015 -Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke in a lower apartment. Crews made entry and extinguished the fire in the lower apartment. Fire did spread into void spaces of adjoining apartments bringing it to a total of four apartments involved with fire. Crews worked to find all hidden fire and the fire was under
    control in about 50 minutes.
    The fire is under investigation.

  • Lazer X Building Fire

    November 5, 2015 - Engine 6 responded to a fire alarm at Lazer X, 244 East Fernhill Avenue. Upon arrival, the engine crew found the building fully charged with smoke and reported a working building fire. Additional fire suppression personnel were requested due to the size of the structure. Upon arrival at the scene, the Incident Commander immediately declared a defensive attack due to the amount of fire present throughout the building. There was no indication of occupants in the structure. Crews continued to defensively attack the fire for over two hours until it was declared under control at 10:03 am. There was one minor firefighter injury on scene. The fire is under investigation.

  • Cheviot Dr. Apartment Fire

    November 26, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 3300 block of Cheviot Dr. Upon arrival crews found smoke and flames visible from the first floor of the two story apartment building.  Crews made entry and located the fire in a first floor apartment's kitchen area with extension into the apartment above.  Firefighters used an aggressive interior attack on both floors to contain the blaze and to ensure all extension was extinguished.  The fire apartment sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage.  The 2nd floor apartment sustained heavy smoke and moderate fire and water damage.  The Red Cross was called to assist the occupants of both apartments.  Neither were home at the time of the blaze. No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  • S. Anthony Blvd. House Fire

    November 26, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire in the 3900 block of S. Anthony Blvd. Upon arrival crews found smoke and flames visible from the second story of the two story home. Crews made entry, determined no one was home and made an aggressive interior attack to contain the blaze in the second floor bedroom area with extension into the attic. Firefighters were able to control the blaze in 18 min. The structure sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage. No injuries were reported.   FWPD, TRAA, Neighborhood Code, AEP, Nipsco and assisted at the scene.   The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

  • Arbors of South Towne Square Apartment Fire

    November 25, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire in the 7900 block of Decatur Rd.  Crews arrived to find heavy smoke in the 3rd floor hallway of the north wing of the three story apartment complex.  Firefighters located and made entry to the fire apartment and were able to contain the blaze without further extension.  Several occupants from surrounding apartments were evacuated as a precaution until ventilation was completed and it was deemed safe for their return.  One person from the fire apartment was transported to a local hospital.  No other injuries were reported.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. 

  • Dolphin Dr. Apartment Fire

    November 22, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire in the 700 block of Dolphin Dr.  Fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from a second floor apartment of the two story structure.  Firefighters entered the apartment and extinguished what appeared to be a kitchen fire.  The fire caused moderate fire and smoke damage and was contained to the kitchen of the apartment.  No injuries were reported.  The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation. 

  • Rothbury Ct. House Fire

    November 21, 2014 -  The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 1800 block of Rothbury Ct. The home's occupants reported smoke in the basement and were evacuating. On arrival crews found smoke visible from the basement and garage of the two story home with all occupants safely outside. Crews made an aggressive interior attack were forced out due to high heat and compromised integrity of the structure. Crews continued to battle the blaze defensively until conditions improved. Progress was made and crews reentered the home to continue fire attack and ensuring no further extension. Some floor collapse on the first floor was reported. At the time of this report, crews remain on scene performing extensive overhaul and ensuring all hot spots are extinguished. No injuries have been reported though one cat died in the fire.   FWPD, Animal Control, TRAA, Neighborhood Code, AEP, Nipsco and St. Joe's rehab bus assisted at the scene.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  • E. Woodland Ave. House Fire

    November 14, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a structure fire this morning in the 300 block of E. Woodland Ave. The first arriving units found smoke coming from the second story of the two story home.  Crews were able to quickly contain the fire to the bedroom and extinguish it within 10 minutes.  Two adults were home at the time of the blaze but were able to self-evacuate prior to FWFD's arrival.  There was moderate fire, smoke and water damage to the bedroom.  The cause of the blaze is under investigation. 

  • Brookside House Fire

    BrooksideNovember 12, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 2000 block of Brookside Street.  First arriving crews reported heavy smoke showing from the roof and attic area.  Crews made entry and found heavy fire in the living room and bedroom of the one story home.  Firefighters worked to contain the blaze while others searched the home.  It was determined no one was home and the fire was controlled in 10 minutes.  No injuries were reported.  The structure sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage.  The Red Cross was requested to assist the residents displaced.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Cherry Street House Fire

    November 3, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the 600 block of Cherry Street.  The first engine arrived on scene and found fire coming from the first floor of the two story home.  Crews made entry and were able to contain and extinguish the blaze in 10 minutes.  While no occupants were home at the time of the blaze, two cats, two rabbits died and one dog was rescued.  Investigators determined the fire was started by an overturned kerosene heater.  The structure sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. 

  • Meyer Ave. House Fire

    November 2, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 500 block of Meyer Ave.  Crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the third floor of the three story home.  Firefighters made entry and were able to bring the fire under control in 16 minutes.  Three adults and two children were able to self- evacuate before FWFD's arrival.  No injuries were reported.  The structure sustained heavy fire damage within the third floor and attic area with moderate water and smoke damage throughout the home.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • E. Paulding Apartment Fire

    November 1, 2014 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 2700 block of E. Paulding Road.  The first units arrived and found light smoke in the hallway of the two story structure.  Crews forced entry to an apartment on the second floor and found a working fire in the kitchen area of the apartment.  Firefighters searched the apartment and found no one.  The apartment's  two occupants had already safely evacuated prior to FWFD's arrival.  While crews extinguished the fire, other crews evacuated nine other apartments as a precaution.  The fire was under control in less than 10 minutes.   Moderate fire, water and smoke damage was sustained in the fire apartment with some water damage to the apartment below.  All other residents were able to return to their apartments.  Red Cross assisted those displaced.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.   

  • Paulding Road Apartment Fire

    November 27, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at the Twin Oaks apartment complex. First arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from a first floor apartment of the two story structure. Crews evacuated the entire building. As firefighters worked to extinguish the fire they determined it had spread to a second floor apartment through a void space. Crews were able to control the blaze in 21 minutes. The structure sustained moderate fire and smoke damage and heavy water damage as the result of a broken water line. One of 12 occupants evacuated was treated at the scene for smoke related injuries. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

  • Butler Rd. Fire

    November 25, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 4099 Butler Road. The call was received by a passing motorist calling from Hillegas Road. The Fort Wayne Fire Department sent a full response (three Engines, one Ladder, the Rescue and two Battalion Chiefs.) On arrival fire was showing from the back side and roof area of the one story pole bard. While crews battled the blaze, FWFD Command called for an additional Engine due to the size of the structure and the limited hydrants and their locations in relation to the fire structure. Concurrently, the address was identified as an Allen County address and Dispatch notified county fire departments. Units from Southwest Fire District, Aboite, Arcola and Washington Fire Departments arrived and assisted FWFD crews already on scene. Together they worked to bring the fire under control in 39 minutes. Once the fire was controlled FWFD transitioned Command to the County units for the necessary and extensive overhaul. No injuries were reported. The fire's cause remains under investigation.

  • Ensign Court House Fire

    November 19, 2013 - Eight people, three adults and five children, escaped an early morning house fire today.  The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to the 7500 block of Ensign Court and found heavy fire coming from the attached garage with possible extension into the second floor of the two story home.  Crews immediately made entry and were able to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes.  The structure sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage.  A neighboring house sustained heat damage to the siding.  No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Tecumseh Bridge Water Rescue

    November 7, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department and its Water Rescue Team responded to a report of a possible vehicle in the water at the Tecumseh Bridge. A regular commuter driving by noticed "new" damage to the bridge with a portion of the cement guardrail missing. On arrival, FWFD divers made entry and located a tuck fully submerged upside down in the water. Further investigation by the divers identified two people inside the cab of the truck. Firefighters were able to extricate the victims and pull the bodies to shore. Both were pronounced dead on scene. A wrecker then pulled the truck from the water at 8:50 a.m. The identity and cause of death of the victims will be released by the Allen County Coroner's office. The cause and time of the crash is under investigation by the FWPD. TRAA, FWPD, DNR, Allen County Coroner, the City's Street Department and Parker Wrecker Service assisted at the scene.

     

  • W. Washington Center Rd. House Fire

    November 6, 2013 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported modular home fully engulfed in fire in the 2700 block of W. Washington Rd.  Upon arrival at lot #219,  firefighters found a single wide home fully involved with fire exposure to the neighboring home.  Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to lot 219, but the fire house was a total loss.  Seven people were home at the time of the blaze but were able to self-evacuate and were being assisted by the Red Cross.  One occupant did suffer burns to their arm and was transported to a local hospital.  As many as five family pets may have perished.  FWPD, TRAA and AEP assisted at the scene.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. 

  • Baldwin Creek Apartment Fire

    New ImageNovember 25, 2012  - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at the F building at 1920 Hobson Road. On arrival crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof on the south end of the two story structure with multiple people on their balconies. Crews rescued those outside and made an interior search and rescue and evacuated more residents. Crews were able to locate the fire and extinguish the blaze. Approximately 40 people were rescued/evacuated from the 24 unit structure and are being assisted by the Red Cross. One person was treated on scene and transported to a local hospital in good condition for smoke related illness. No other injuries were reported. While the fire was contained to the south end of the building, the entire structure sustained heavy smoke damage.   • Riverview Terrace Apartments

    November 21, 2012 - Just before 5:30 a.m., FWFD firefighters were called to the Riverview Terrace Apartments in the 1800 block of Griswold Drive.  Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the second and third floor of the three story building.  While crews advanced handlines and found fire in the basement area and were able to quickly extinguish it, other crews searched the building and helped evacuate an estimated 50 people.  Four occupants were transported by EMS for minor smoke inhalation and were reported to be in fair condition.  Two pets perished in the fire.  The structure sustained minor fire damage, with some heavy smoke and water damage.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Lincoln Apartment Fire

    November 19, 2012 - One person was seriously injured in an apartment fire overnight.  The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to 1006 Lincoln and saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the two story - four apartment structure on arrival.  Two residents and three pets were able to self-evacuate.  One person was pulled to safety by the FWFD and was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.  Crews used an aggressive interior fire attack and were able to contain the fire to one apartment with some extension into the attic area.  The structure sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. 

  • Twin Oaks Apartment Fire

    November 15, 2012 -  The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 2708 Paulding Road E. Upon arrival crews saw fire through the roof of the apartment complex. Because of the active fire and the structure type, an additional alarm/response was called. Crews on scene made an aggressive interior attack. While the fire was contained and did not spread to all sixteen units in the apartment building, crews did evacuate the entire structure. At this time we are unable to provide an exact number of residents affected. Red Cross was called to assist those displaced. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  • Marriott Hotel Fire

     November 5, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at the Marriott Hotel at 305 East Washington Center Road.  Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke in the second floor of the west wing of the hotel.  While additional fire crews were requested due to the structure size and the potential occupancy levels, on scene crews quickly located the fire room and were able to extinguish remaining fire.  The hotel's fire suppression sprinkler system greatly contained the fire and had already partially extinguished it.  Fort Wayne Police officers assisted firefighters in quickly evacuating approximately 14 occupants from rooms nearby the fire room.  The hotel management team relocated these patrons.  The hotel remains operational other than the first and second floors of the affected wing.  The fire was determined to be the result of an electrical malfunction in the heating unit in the second floor fire room.  No injuries were reported. 

  • Balsam Lane House Fire

    November 4, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department battled a house fire at 7003 Balsam Lane.  When crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the structure with extension into the home.  Crews were able to contain the blaze in 15 minutes.  No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • FWFD Assists at Motel Fire

    New HaveNovember 3, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department assisted at an early morning fire in New Haven.  Crews were dispatched to 7001 SR 930 East after a mutual aid request from New Haven Adams Township.  The structure,  The Motel Wayne, was fully involved when crews arrived.  The fire had stared in Room 11 and extended through the ceiling of the room and into the attic area where it spread quickly.  While the entire single structure was not damaged, the parts that did sustain heavy fire damage are estimated to be approximately $225,000. 

    While none of the 55 occupants of the motel were injured, the Red Cross was dispatched to assist with emergency aid.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

  • Industrial Building Fire

    Moeller Rd. FireNovember 3, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 5402 Moeller Road.  Upon arrival at the industrial site, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear southeast corner of the structure.  Initially, crews made an aggressive interior attack but were forced to evacuate due to the compromised structural integrity of the building.  Crews then moved outside and fought the fire defensively. More than 60 FWFD firefighters were on scene.  One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital and was soon released.  Mutual aid was requested for water support.  New Haven Adams Township, Poe, Hoagland, N.E. Fire, Monroeville and St. Joseph Township all responded.  Additionally, FWPD, TRAA, City Utilities, and AEP assisted at the scene.  Limited FWFD crews remained on the scene throughout the day during overhaul activities.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

  • Morning House Fire

    November 2, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire this morning. Upon arrival at 3422 Euclid Street, crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor.  Crews quickly made entry and located the fire in the attached garage and kitchen area of the two-story home and were able to extinguish it.  Two occupants were home at the time of the fire but were able to self-evacuate prior to FWFD's arrival.  No injuries were reported.  The structure sustained heavy fire damage to the kitchen and garage area with heavy smoke damage throughout the home. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

  • Reckeweg Rd. House Fire

    November 25, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 1430 Reckeweg Road after neighbors called 911 reporting smoke coming from the apartment.  Upon arrival crews found fire in the upstairs bedroom.  The fire was quickly contained and extinguished.  There were no injuries.  Red Cross was called for assistance.  The fire's cause remains under investigation. 

  • Gaywood Dr. House Fire

    November 21, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department is investigating the cause of a house fire at 4314 Gaywood Drive.  Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the home.  No one was home during the fire and the house appeared to be vacant.  One firefighter was treated for minor burns at the scene. 

  • House Fire on Gay Street

    November 18, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2941 Gay Street. Upon arrival units found heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic and second floor of the two story residential structure.  Firefighters used an initial interior attack but were forced to clear the home due to the deteriorating structural integrity.  Outside, firefighters continued to battle the blaze for 50 minutes before it was brought under control.  Two occupants and their pets were able to self-evacuate prior to the FWFD's arrival.  No injuries were reported.  The fire's cause remains under investigation. 

  • House Fire on Lillie Street

    November 8, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived on scene after reports of a possible structure fire at 4007 Lillie Street.  Smoke and fire were visible from a bedroom window.  Crews were able to contain the fire to the room and quickly extinguished it.  The home had moderate smoke and fire damage.  Two people were home at the time and were able to self-evacuate.  One pet was saved.  The fire's cause remains under investigation. 

  • Momper Insulation Fire

    The Fort Wayne Fire Department closed the 2400 block of West Main Street on Sunday while battling flames at the Momper insulation company. The fire was first spotted around 11:30 a.m. Sunday and emergency responders were on the scene within minutes. It was not long before flames caused an exterior wall to collapse on a Fort Wayne firefighter, causing minor injuries. There were no other injuries in the fire. 

    Officials say it could take two weeks to clean up from the fire that destroyed the building. City homeland security director Bernie Beier says about 30 vehicles were inside the building, which accounted for much of the fire's heavy black smoke.  Currently the city is working with the state Department of Natural Resources, Department of Environmental Management, state Sen. Tom Wyss' office and Homeland Security to come up with the best plan for the cleanup.

    Although West Main Street is now open,  West Swinney Park is closed as the clean-up continues.

  • Casino Drive House Fire

    November 2, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 6616 Casino Drive.  Upon arrival, crews found fire in the kitchen of the home.  The fire was quickly contained and extinguished.  One occupant was home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury.  The fire's cause is under investigation.

  • Liberty Street House Fire

    November 1, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a reported structure fire at 1208 Liberty Street.  On arrival crews found moderate smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure.  Firefighters brought the blaze under control in less than 40 minutes.  There was extensive fire and smoke damage to the back side and attic area of the two story house.  No one was home at the time of the incident.  The fire's cause remains under investigation. 

  • Trailer Fire

    October 29, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2922 W. Coliseum Blvd.  Upon arrival crews found the trailer fully engulfed in flames.  It was reported by neighbors that said the trailer was vacant.  There were no injuries.  The trailer was a total loss.  The fire in under investigation. 

  • FWFD Accepting Applications

    The Fort Wayne Fire Department will be accepting applications for lateral transfers from December 7th, 2010 until January 21st, 2011. Applications will not be available until December 7th, 2010. You must have the following minimum requirements in order to submit an application:

    • Must be a current full-time paid employee with a career fire department in Indiana for at least one year. Full-time employee shall be defined as a person who works a minimum of 40-56 hours per week and is compensated as a full-time employee and receives full-time employee benefits.
    • CPAT Certification*
    • The following certifications valid through Indiana Department of Homeland Security
                 1. Firefighter I/II 
                 2. EMT/B or higher 
                 3. Hazardous Materials Operations 
                 4. Tech Rescue Awareness 
    • If the candidate meets all of the above qualifications, but has been laid off from their career departments, they will be eligible for up to one year from their lay off date.
    • Must not be older than 36 years of age by graduation date of the Academy (estimated to be September 30, 2011)

    *CPAT certification must have been completed after January 21, 2010.

    *FWFD will be offering CPAT testing beginning December 13, 2010. You must have your CPAT certification no later February 12, 2011.
