Eden Green Apartment Fire

IMG 0076UPDATE:  The Fort Wayne Fire Department has learned from the occupant of the apartment in which the fire started, there was a working smoke detector in the apartment until it was taken down by the occupant several weeks ago.  Therefore, the alarm did not function at the time of the fire.  An additional patient was transported privately to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

January 22, 2012 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire at 1314 Greene Street, complex 4-B.  Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the second story of the unit with people visible outside on their balconies in both the front and rear of the structure.  Crews immediately began their rescue efforts.  Residents also indicated someone was still inside the apartment building.  Firefighters already searching quickly located and rescued the subject inside an apartment.  The patient was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.  The five rescued residents, considered to be in good condition, were also transported for observation.  The fire was contained and extinguished quickly.  The fire originated in the kitchen and is considered accidental in nature caused by unattended food/cooking on the stove.  No evidence of a working smoke detector was found.
